The Bar Harbor Garden Club welcomes Kate Garland, University of Maine Cooperative
Extension Horticulturist, as the keynote speaker for their annual meeting and luncheon on
Thursday, May 8 at Kebo Valley Golf Club, Bar Harbor. Ms. Garland’s presentation, “Native Plants and Pollinator Friendly Gardens,” will highlight how home gardeners can have successful and rewarding gardening experiences using native plants and inviting pollinators.
Ms. Garland’s work supports gardeners as they learn to improve efficiency and build their
horticulture skills. In addition, Ms. Garland works with school and community gardens to
develop plans that will build sustainability and improve community impact. As the coordinator of the Master Gardener Volunteer program, Ms. Garland trains civic-minded gardeners to help with community projects such as education and food insecurity projects.
Ms. Garland’s work also involves supporting and coordinating a team of Maine Harvest for
Hunger volunteers whose mission is to grow, glean, and distribute thousands of pounds of food annually to shelters, food pantries, and individuals struggling with food insecurity in and around Penobscot County.
Members and the public are invited to attend the luncheon at 11:30 a.m. followed by Ms.
Garland’s presentation. The luncheon will include soup, wrap, salad, dessert, and beverage.
