The Bar Harbor Garden Club is pleased to welcome Cindy Tibbitts, owner of Hummingbird Farm in Turner, as the guest speaker for its April meeting on Thursday, April 9th at Birch Bay Retirement Village, Bar Harbor. Ms. Tibbitts’ presentation will be an engaging tutorial on all things Clematis. Clematis are perennials in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Known for their stunning blooms, these climbing vines can provide vertical interest to your garden.
Ms. Tibbitts began offering Clematis in 2000 and soon discovered that many of her customers were intimidated by these flowering vines. Other customers wanted hard-to-find varieties. To meet these needs, the folks at Hummingbird Farm have researched and experimented, constantly looking for rare and reliable varieties and developing the best techniques for planting and caring for them. Hummingbird Farm sells a large selection of Clematis, all disease resistant and hardy to Zone 4. According to the 2023 U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Map, almost all of Mount Desert Island is in Zone 6a while the surrounding off island region is Zone 5b.
Hummingbird Farm is now a strictly Clematis-growing operation, specializing in “Clematis for the Frozen North”. The website, http://HummingbirdFarm.net is full of information on choosing and growing Clematis, including “The Frozen North Pruning System”. Have you struggled with Clematis in the past?
