Youth in Maine schools are encouraged to develop healthy eating habits and practice

environmental stewardship through the support of the Maine School Garden Network (MSGN). Educational school gardens are promoted throughout the state with the assistance and guidance of the MSGN. Eleven schools in Hancock County participate in the network. One of the special events offered by the network is the Maine School Garden Day which provides workshops, garden tours, and networking opportunities for teachers, garden volunteers and coordinators.
Brittany Layman, RN, BSN, and NCSN (Nationally Certified School Nurse) is the Director of Health, Wellness and Safety in Regional School Unit 22 (Hampden, Maine). This role complements her position as the Board Chairperson of the MSGN. Last May, one of her middle schools, Reeds Brook Middle School, hosted the MSGN Day which highlighted the school-based garden program.
Joining the program will be Patricia Kelley, the Ed Tech Garden and Greenhouse coordinator for Mount Desert Elementary, who collaborated with the MSGN to sponsor a greenhouse and initiate an educational garden program in the school.
The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, December 14 at 1:00 P.M. at Birch Bay
Retirement Village, Bar Harbor. The program will include time for questions and will be followed by a Holiday Tea and club business meeting. All are welcome to attend.
