The Bar Harbor Garden Club is pleased to welcome April Nugent, Farm Manager at Peggy Rockefeller Farm as the guest speaker for its March meeting on Thursday, March 12th at Birch Bay Retirement Village, Bar Harbor. Ms. Nugent’s presentation will be a general introduction to the farm property, its growing practices and community engagement programs. More specifically, April will talk about the threats to small scale agriculture (why should we care about our farms?), farming culture and the specific practices utilized in the farm’s livestock production, as well as wildlife conservation and clean energy projects on the farm. Finally, she will touch on community engagement and education happening on the farm.

April is currently the Farm Manager for College of the Atlantic’s Peggy Rockefeller Farm where she works alongside her team of farm staff and work-study students to care for the school’s livestock, farm the land, teach courses and preserve native wildlife habitat on the property. She is an alumnus of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she studied sustainable agriculture systems with a focus on livestock management and swine genetics. She’s passionate about growing healthy ethical food, expanding food access in rural communities and adapting farming practices to climate change. When she’s not farming, April enjoys enjoying oil painting, bird watching, embroidery and the multitude of outdoor sporting activities available in Maine.
