Please join us for a talk about the Bar Harbor Garden Club MDI Food Waste Pilot, December 10, 2024 at 5:30 pm at the Southwest Harbor Library.
Food Waste is a nationwide problem. As much as 40% of the country’s food goes uneaten and food is the largest category of material put into municipal landfills, one of the largest sources of human related methane emissions in the country. Bar Harbor Garden Club, Maine Coast Heritage Trust and Chickadee Compost are partnering together to provide a subscriber-based service that diverts household food scraps from the waste stream and contributes to compost production. Come learn how you can participate as a subscriber in the first MDI program of its kind.
Speakers:
Renee Duncan – MDI Regional Outreach Manager and Stone Barn Farm Steward, Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Renee takes care of Stone Barn Farm Preserve and coordinates community outreach for the MDI region.
Kate Tomkins – Founder and Owner of Chickadee Compost, a Surry-based composting company that diverts food waste from local landfills in an effort to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.
Barbara Amstutz, Jane Sanderson – Bar Harbor Garden Club. The club’s mission is to promote the love of horticulture, to protect and preserve our natural resources, to provide educational opportunities and to contribute to civic and environmental needs of MDI.
