The Bar Harbor Garden Club welcomes Dr. Sean Birkel, Maine State Climatologist, as the guest speaker for their October meeting on Thursday, October 9th at Birch Bay Retirement Village, Bar Harbor. Dr. Birkel’s presentation will highlight historic Maine winter storms, going as far back as the 1700s, and how they have changed over the years. As the back to back storms of January 2024 proved, winter storms can be a significant weather event with potentially devastating impacts depending upon their severity.
Dr. Birkel is an Assistant Professor and the Maine State Climatologist with a joint appointment to the Climate Change Institute and Cooperative Extension. His research areas include climate variability, modeling, and data visualization with particular interest in past, present, and future climate variability across the North Atlantic and Arctic regions. Since 2012 he has been developing the climate data visualization website ClimateReanalyzer.org. As the state climatologist, he oversees the Maine Climate Office and provides climate and weather information to Maine stakeholders to facilitate decision-making, policy, and planning. He also serves on the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Maine Climate Council.
Dr. Birkel’s presentation will begin at 1:00 P.M. and will include time for questions.
