Awards Received by the Bar Harbor Garden Club for 2017 Projects


Our President, Dianne McMullan, accepted a number of Awards presented to the BHGC at the GCFM Convention in June.  These awards cover projects the club undertook in 2017.

2017 Club of Distinction Awards —We won the Gold Seal for the highest number of points of any club: 355! This award recognizes club accomplishments in all areas of garden club activity during the award year.

The Yearbook Award from GCFM – 2nd Place, 70 – 99 members. Yearbooks must conform to the format outlined by the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

The Gloria Bryson Burrill Tree Planting Award – This award comes with an honorarium of $25 to the club with the most outstanding tree planting project. Emphasis is on low maintenance, quality trees suited to local climate and environmental conditions.  We had a number of projects to submit:

  • another pagoda dogwood at the Blue Star Memorial Marker,
  • the witch hazel (hamamelis virginiana) at Mount Desert Island Hospital, in which we partnered with the Garden Club of Mount Desert, and
  • the project of planting apple trees at local elementary schools. (Connors Emerson and Mount Desert Elementary schools were the recipients in 2017.)

Norene S. Veal New Members Award – for the club with the most new members from March 1 through the end of February each overlapping year. The BHGC had 12 new members within the time frame of 2017 – 2018.

Certificate of Recognition for continuing to maintain the Blue Star Memorial Marker – The club won a certificate from GCFM, New England Garden Clubs, Inc. and National Garden Clubs. Inc.

Certificate of Participation for outstanding work with the development of school gardening projects – The club’s Youth Activities Committee, to which this certificate is connected, has also won a number of awards for their projects. Please click here to see the list of these awards.
