Indian Head Garden

The first time ever being featured on a garden tour, “Indian Head” is a home to flora and fauna alike. Located on Manchester Point in Northeast Harbor, it has an abundant species of mammals, insects, land and sea birds living in harmony in the habitat created by Indian Head’s owner. Inspired by her artistic vision and her deep love of nature, she has delicately sculpted the natural landscape and transformed the property by creating various garden rooms. These “rooms” contain structural design and natural elements for a harmonious balance of diverse habitats ranging from meadows, woodlands and shoreline. Native trees, fruit bearing shrubs, and flowering plants provide essential resources for the many local species of animals while affording a tranquil and meditative environment for family, friends and guests.

As you leave the formal entry courtyard, you will see a wooded area that provides an opportunity for rest and meditation. Enjoy the surrounding sounds and scents beneath the shade of the Scotch pine canopy. The path leads to a covered porch that overlooks the owners designed granite soaking pool and a cascading stream bed that empties into a water lily dotted frog pond below. From this vantage point you will see the vintage faux bois seating area, nestled among monumental jardinières on the eastern most point of the property.

As you walk through the gardens, passing several pieces of sculpture along the way, take the time to pause and allow your senses to absorb the sights, sounds and scents of the natural beauty around you in the many seating areas along the garden paths. Fragrant lilies dot the colorful perennial flower boarders as you ascend the path that opens to a grassy courtyard. You will arrive at the owners terraced kitchen garden area with raised beds of organically grown fruits and vegetables.

A cranberry lined path will lead you to the beach campfire area along the expansive shoreline with historic views of Jesuit field and Somes Sound. As you exit the property, meander through the wild flower meadow noting the lively sculpture along the way. Through thoughtful garden planning and consideration for nature, the owner has provided a microcosm of the beautiful environments that MDI has to offer.
