Gathering of the BHGC members at the Memorial Blue Star Marker braving the frigid temperatures.
Under the leadershp of the Co- chairs Jim Linnane and Carl Nelson, the annual Veterans’ Day ceremony was held according to the tradition on the 11th month, on the 11th day at the 11th hour at the Memorial Blue Star Marker on route 3in Bar Harbor. A hearty group braved the frigid 39 degree F temperatures and blustery winds blowing at 12 mph. A robust gathering of over 20 members and guests payed their respects to the many men and women who are serving and served in the armed forces. Chris White, a veteran of the US Army and one of BHGC’s newest members, gave an address focused on Maine’s history and tradition of service. Michaeleen Ward presented a history of the Blue Star Marker. Phyllis Mobraaten read “Flanders Fields” and innovatively requested audience members to read parts of “Garden Memories” which they did to great effect. Don Bell helped to install the wreath the day before when the parking lot was full of heavy construction machinery paving Route 3 right in front of the marker. Eileen Linnane prepared a table of snacks with hot coffee and tea to help ward off the cold.
Many thanks to all the fabulous efforts of the Bar Harbor Garden Club team who organized this event and kept the Blue Star Marker Memorial tradition alive in our hearts and minds.
